WESTMINSTER, MD - Three Civil Air Patrol cadets from the Carroll Composite Squadron recently earned the Wright Brothers Award. Cadets Russell Gehret, Justin Main, and Justin Sova were presented their award certificates and ribbons on November 29 at the squadron's weekly meeting at Winters Mill High School.
The Wright Brothers Award is the first cadet milestone award. It is earned once a cadet completes the first phase of the cadet program. Cadets, having completed the first three achievement levels, may test for the award. They must pass a comprehensive test on aerospace topics and leadership theory, take a physical fitness test, pass two uniform inspections, participate in squadron activities, attend moral leadership discussions, and go before a review board.
The cadets were presented their awards by First Lieutenant Kevin McHale, squadron commander, who was assisted by Cadet Major Jacob Reed, cadet commander. Cadets earning the Wright Brothers Award are promoted to the grade of Cadet Staff Sergeant. They receive an award certificate and a ribbon for their uniform.
Cadet Gehret, 14, has been a member of the Carroll Composite Squadron for almost one year. Gehret, of Hampstead, is a member of Bravo flight, which was also named Honor Flight for November at the same ceremony.
Cadet Main, 15, joined the Carroll squadron a year ago. Main, of Glen Rock, Pennsylvania, is also a member of Bravo flight.
Cadet Sova, 13, has been a member of the Carroll squadron for almost two years and is a member of Bravo flight. Sova, of Owings Mills, is also a member of the squadron's emergency services ground team.
Civil Air Patrol, the official U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, is a civilian, volunteer, nonprofit, service organization. CAP's cadet programs provide young men and women with a safe and motivating environment in which to grow and explore opportunities in the military and aviation industries. Cadets progress through a 16-step program of leadership and aerospace education.
The Carroll Composite Squadron meets Tuesday evenings at the Winters Mill High School on Gorsuch Road in Westminster. Prospective cadets, ages 12-18, and their parents are always welcome. More information can be found at www.carrollcap.org.
