WESTMINSTER, MD - Three Civil Air Patrol cadets from the Carroll Composite Squadron recently earned the Wright Brothers Award. Cadets Tyler Czarnowsky, Alec Geatches, and Zach Zaykoski were presented their award certificates and ribbons in October at the squadrons weekly meetings at Winters Mill High School. The Wright Brothers Award is the first cadet milestone award. It is earned once a cadet completes the first phase of the cadet program. Cadets, having completed the first three achievement levels, may test for the award. They must pass a comprehensive test on aerospace topics and leadership theory, take a physical fitness test, pass two uniform inspections, participate in squadron activities, attend moral leadership discussions, and go before a review board. The cadets were presented their awards by First Lieutenant Kevin McHale, squadron commander, who was assisted by Cadet Captain Jacob Reed, cadet commander. Cadets earning the Wright Brothers Award are promoted to the grade of Cadet Staff Sergeant. They receive an award certificate and a ribbon for their uniform. Cadet Czarnowsky, 13, is an eighth grade student at Shiloh Middle School. He has been a member of the Carroll Composite Squadron for almost one year. Czarnowsky, of Hampstead, serves as flight sergeant for Bravo flight. He is also a member of the emergency services ground team and the public affairs staff. He was also named Honor Cadet for the squadron for the month of October 2005. Czarnowsky hopes to attend the Air Force or Coast Guard Academy and become a pilot. Cadet Geatches, 13, is a freshman at Frederick Christian Academy. Geatches, of Frederick, has been a member of Carroll Composite Squadron for almost one year also. He currently serves as assistant flight sergeant for Alpha flight. Geatches plans to attend college after high school. Cadet Zaykoski, 16, is a junior at North Carroll High School. He currently serves as flight sergeant for Alpha flight. Zaykoski, of Hampstead, has been a member of the squadron for a year and plans to attend a military academy with hopes of becoming a pilot. Civil Air Patrol, the official U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, is a civilian, volunteer, nonprofit, service organization. CAP's cadet programs provide young men and women with a safe and motivating environment in which to grow and explore opportunities in the military and aviation industries. Cadets progress through a 16-step program of leadership and aerospace education. The Carroll Composite Squadron meets Tuesday evenings at the Winters Mill High School on Gorsuch Road in Westminster. Prospective cadets, ages 12-18, and their parents are always welcome. More information can be found at www.carrollcap.org.
