WESTMINSTER, MD -- Cadet Captain Jacob A. Reed accepted the position of cadet commander of the Civil Air Patrol's Carroll Composite Squadron during a ceremony on August 9 at Winters Mill High School in Westminster, Maryland. The outgoing cadet commander, Cadet Colonel Rachel Gibbs, relinquished command to First Lt. J. Kevin McHale, Carroll squadron commander, by handing him the squadron guidon. McHale then offered command to Reed, who accepted the guidon as he took command. Reed, 15, joined CAP almost three years ago. He has most recently served as flight commander and cadet aerospace education officer. He serves as the recorder on both the Maryland Wing Cadet Advisory Council and the Middle East Region Cadet Advisory Council. Reed is active on CAP drill teams and recently competed at the National Cadet Competition. He has attended the Tri-Wing Encampment for three years, serving on staff for the past two years. Cadet Reed is a home schooled junior who also attends Carroll Community College part-time. He regularly volunteers with Scales and Tales, assisting with the care of injured birds of prey and reptiles along with working at public education demonstrations. He plans to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy. Gibbs, 18, had been the cadet commander for 14 months. She will be attending Norwich University in Vermont this fall with a major in international studies. Gibbs recently earned the Spaatz Award, CAPs highest cadet milestone. Civil Air Patrol, the official U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, is a civilian, volunteer, nonprofit, service organization. CAP's cadet programs provide young men and women with a safe and motivating environment in which to grow and explore opportunities in the military and aviation industries. Cadets progress through a 16-step program of leadership and aerospace education. The Carroll Composite Squadron meets Tuesday evenings at Winters Mill High School on Gorsuch Road in Westminster. Prospective cadets, ages 12-18, and their parents are always welcome. More information can be found at www.carrollcap.org.
