WESTMINSTER, MD Cadet Master Sergeant Glen Edwards, from Civil Air Patrols Carroll Composite Squadron, won first place at the CAP Middle East Region Cadet Speak Off on April 23. The annual contest was held in Richmond, Virginia, and has participants from seven wings in the region. Cadet Edwards, of Finksburg, participated in the advanced category (5-7 minutes) for prepared speeches. In his speech, Edwards compared air travel of the past to air travel of today and beyond. He challenged the audience to think how times have changed, how our lives have been altered, and where the future will take us. Lieutenant Colonel Bonnie Braun, Middle East Region Chief of Staff, presented Edwards with a trophy during the awards ceremony. After winning the competition, Edwards repeated his performance before the entire conference at the annual banquet that evening. He received a standing ovation following his speech. Edwards, an eighth grader at Shiloh Middle School, won at the state level in March 2005, and represented the Maryland Wing at the regional competition. In addition to this, he won first place at the regional competition in 2003 for the basic category after winning at the state level. Cadet Edwards, 13, has been a member of the Carroll Composite Squadron of Civil Air Patrol for two years. He currently serves as cadet first sergeant and leads the squadrons color guard. He plans to pursue a career in teaching. Civil Air Patrol, the official U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, is a civilian, volunteer, nonprofit, service organization. CAP's cadet programs provide young men and women with a safe and motivating environment in which to grow and explore opportunities in the military and aviation industries. Cadets progress through a 16-step program of leadership and aerospace education. The Carroll Composite Squadron meets Tuesday evenings at the U.S. Army Reserve Center on Malcolm Drive in Westminster. Prospective cadets, ages 12-18, and their parents are always welcome. More information can be found at www.carrollcap.org.
