WESTMINSTER, Md. – Cadet Zachary Bowen, 14, from Civil Air Patrol's Carroll Composite Squadron was presented the Billy Mitchell Award during a ceremony on March 22 at the US Army Reserve Center in Westminster.
Major Christian Ready, Deputy Group Commander for the Maryland Wing of CAP, presented the award to Bowen. First Lieutenant Kevin McHale, commander of the Carroll squadron, and Cadet Major Rachel Gibbs, assisted in the ceremony.
The Mitchell Award is an important milestone in a cadet's career, marking the end of the enlisted phase of the cadet program and the start of the officer phase. Cadets earning the Mitchell Award receive the grade of Cadet Second Lieutenant. In addition to this, cadets may enter the US Air Force, Air National Guard, or Air Force Reserve at the advanced pay grade of E-3 (airman first class).
Cadet Bowen’s parents, Tim and Stacey Bowen, installed the new rank on his epaulets during the promotion ceremony.
Bowen was required to pass a combined leadership and aerospace exam along with a physical fitness test, uniform inspection, be a leader during moral leadership discussions, mentor other cadets in aerospace topics, pass a review board and attend squadron activities.
Cadet Bowen, of Finksburg, is a homeschooled eighth grader and is currently first chair oboe with the McDaniel College Band. He recently served as the cadet basic training instructor and is a member of the cadet public affairs team. He has been a member of Civil Air Patrol for 18 months. He plans to pursue a career in law enforcement.
The mission of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program is to provide the youth of our nation a quality program that enhances their leadership skills through an interest in aviation, and simultaneously provide services to the U.S. Air Force and the local community.
The Carroll Composite Squadron meets every Tuesday night at the US Army Reserve Center on Malcolm Drive in Westminster. Prospective cadets and their parents are always welcome. More information can be found at www.carrollcap.org.
