WESTMINSTER, MD Members of Civil Air Patrol's Carroll Composite Squadron are showing their support for US troops in a tangible way. Cadets and seniors members collected snacks, reading material, and other useful items which will be sent troops stationed near Kabul, Afghanistan. The Carroll Composite Squadron collected the items in early February. They will be shipped to 1st Lieutenant Tom Reed, the squadron's deputy commander for cadets. Reed, of Westminster, is currently serving a four-month tour in Afghanistan. Once the packages are received, Reed will distribute the gifts to troops serving with him. The drive to send the items was headed up by Cadet Major Rachel Gibbs, the squadron's cadet commander. Gibbs, 17, encouraged the cadets, their families, and senior members to give generously. Civil Air Patrol, the official US Air Force Auxiliary, is a nonprofit organization with more than 60,000 members nationwide. It performs 95 percent of continental US inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the US Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and counterdrug missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. CAP's cadet programs provide young men and women with a safe and motivating environment in which to grow and explore opportunities in the military and aviation industries. The Carroll Composite Squadron meets Tuesday evenings at the US Army Reserve Center on Malcolm Drive in Westminster. Prospective members are always welcome.
