WESTMINSTER, MD – Cadet Captain Rachel L. Gibbs, 17, was awarded the 2004/2005 Maryland Wing full scholarship towards completing her requirements for a FAA Private Pilot license. Cadet Gibbs is a member of the Carroll Composite Squadron of CAP, which meets in Westminster.
The scholarship was awarded on January 3 by Colonel Kay Joslin Walling, Commander of the CAP Maryland Wing. It covers aircraft maintenance and fuel costs for 40 hours of flight time.   Cadet Capt. Gibbs will be supervised by a CAP pilot while flying in a CAP Cessna 172 aircraft.
There are approximately 650 cadets in the Maryland Wing at this time. Gibbs was the only cadet in the wing selected for this scholarship.
During the summer of 2004, Gibbs graduated from the Maryland Wing Solo School in Hagerstown, resulting in two solo flights.   She was also the only cadet in her class to score a perfect score on the FAA Private Pilot exam.
Gibbs is a homeschooled senior who plans to join the ROTC cadet corps at Norwich University in Vermont. She is currently the cadet commander at the Carroll Composite Squadron and hopes become an Air Force officer following college.
Civil Air Patrol, the official U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, is a civilian, volunteer, nonprofit, service organization. CAP's cadet programs provide young men and women with a safe and motivating environment in which to grow and explore opportunities in the military and aviation industries. Cadets progress through a 16-step program of leadership and aerospace education.
The Carroll Composite Squadron meets Tuesday evenings at the U.S. Army Reserve Center on Malcolm Drive in Westminster. Prospective cadets, ages 12-18, and their parents are always welcome. More information can be found at www.carrollcap.org.
