Krionderis, Rabe, and Reed awarded Mitchell

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Three cadets from Civil Air Patrol's Carroll Composite Squadron were awarded their General Billy Mitchell Award at the squadron's year-end banquet on December 11 in Westmisnter. Cadets Nicholas Krionderis, Ariel Rabe, and Jacob Reed each completed the requirements for this award.
        CAP Group Two Commander, Lt. Colonel Gerald Weiss, presented the awards to the cadets and was assisted by Major Christian Ready, Commander of the Carroll squadron.
        The Mitchell Award is an important milestone in a cadet's career, marking the end of the enlisted phase of the cadet program and the start of the officer phase. Cadets earning the Mitchell Award receive the grade of Cadet Second Lieutenant.
The cadets were required to pass a combined leadership and aerospace exam along with a physical fitness test, uniform inspection, be a leader during moral leadership discussions, mentor other cadets in aerospace topics, pass a review board and attend squadron activities. Cadets must serve in CAP a minimum of 18 months prior to completing the enlisted phase.
        Cadet 2nd Lt. Nicholas Krionderis,14, of Westminster, is a freshman at Westminster High School. He is a flight commander at Carroll Composite Squadron and also serves as Cadet Emergency Services Officer. He has been a member of CAP for three years and plans to attend the US Air Force Academy.
        Cadet 2nd Lt. Ariel Rabe, 18, of Owings Mills, is a senior at Owings Mills High School. He has been involved in CAP for three years. Rabe serves as Cadet Deputy and also serves as the Cadet Moral Leadership Officer. He hopes to attend the US Air Force Academy and be a pilot or engineer.
        Cadet 2nd Lt. Jacob Reed, 14, of Westminster, is a homeschooled tenth grader and part-time student at Carroll Community College. He serves as a flight commander and is the Cadet Leadership Officer at the Carroll Composite Squadron, where he has been a member for two years. He is also the Vice Chair of the Maryland Wing Cadet Advisory Council and a member of the Maryland Wing Drill Team. His plans are to attend the US Air Force Academy.
        The mission of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program is to provide the youth of our nation a quality program that enhances their leadership skills through an interest in aviation, and simultaneously provide services to the U.S. Air Force and the local community. Cadets progress through a 16-step program of leadership and aerospace activities.
        The Carroll Composite Squadron meets every Tuesday night at the US Army Reserve Center on Malcolm Drive in Westminster. Prospective cadets, age 12-18, and their parents are always welcome. More information can be found at www.carrollcap.org.
