WESTMINSTER, MD Cadet Joseph T. Maher, of Civil Air Patrol's Carroll Composite Squadron, received his Wright Brothers Award during the squadron's year-end banquet on December 11 in Westminster. The Wright Brothers Award is the first milestone award of the CAP cadet program, marking the end of airman phase and the start of the noncommissioned officer phase. Cadet Maher was promoted to the rank of Cadet Staff Sergeant during the award ceremony. Major Christian Ready, Commander of the Carroll squadron, presided over the ceremony and was assisted by First Lieutenant Tom Reed, Deputy Commander for Cadets. Maher, 16, serves as an element leader in the squadron. He is a member of the squadron's 2004 Color Guard. Civil Air Patrol, the official U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, is a civilian, volunteer, nonprofit, service organization. CAP's cadet programs provide young men and women with a safe and motivating environment in which to grow and explore opportunities in the military and aviation industries. The local Carroll Composite Squadron meets Tuesday evenings at the U.S. Army Reserve Center on Malcolm Drive in Westminster. Prospective cadets and their parents are always welcome.
