Four cadets from the Carroll Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol were recognized June 7 for their participation in the Middle East Region Cadet Competition. The ceremony was held at Maryland Wing headquarters in Glen Burnie. Cadet Captain Rachel Gibbs, of Gettysburg; Cadet CMSgt Jacob Reed, of Westminster; Cadet TSgt Zachary Bowen, of Finksburg; and Cadet A1C Chiara Burgan, or Westminster, were part of the 16-member Drill Team representing the Maryland Wing of CAP. There are currently more than 700 cadets in the Maryland Wing. The competition, held at Fort Pickett, Va., on April 17, included representatives from the seven-state Middle East Region, with Maryland placing second overall. The teams were judged in seven categories: uniform inspection, a written leadership and aerospace exam, quiz bowl competition, one-mile run, standard drill, innovative drill and volleyball. Civil Air Patrol provides youths ages 12 to 18 the opportunity to develop leadership skills through a multi-step program using aerospace and aviation activities. Activities include flight training, model rocketry, search and rescue, radio communications, physical fitness and more. Cadets also have opportunities to participate in the many national activities and courses available around the country. The Carroll Squadron meets each Tuesday evening at the Army Reserve Center on Malcolm Drive in Westminster. Prospective cadets and their parents are always welcome. Additional information can be found at www.carrollcap.org.
