Three cadets from the Carroll Composite Squadron of the Civil Air Patrol Nicholas Bamford, Zachary Bowen, and Glen Edwards -- received the Wright Brothers Award at a ceremony April 27 at the Army Reserve Center in Westminster. The awards were presented by Major Christian Ready, squadron commander. Cadets earning this award received a ribbon, certificate, and promotion. The Wright Brothers Award marks the completion of the first phase in the cadet program with cadets earning the rank of cadet staff sergeant. Each cadet earning the award was required to pass a written exam, a drill test, pass a battery of physical fitness challenges, participate in squadron activities, and meet before a board of squadron members. Bamford, of Reisterstown, is an element leader. Bowen, of Finksburg, is an element leader and a member of the CAP Maryland Wing Drill Team. Edwards, of Finksburg, is also an element leader and a member of the Squadron's Color Guard. An element is an Air Force term: a squadron is broken into flights; each flight is then broken into elements. When the squadron gathers into formation, they form up within their elements and flights, each division having its own leader. Element leaders have certain responsibilities to the members of their element, such as informing them of upcoming meetings and events, uniform requirements, and assisting their element members (which are usually lower ranking) in any area they need help, whether it be academic, drill, or discipline The Carroll Composite Squadron meets each Tuesday at the Army Reserve Center on Malcolm Drive in Westminster. The Cadet Program is open to ages 12-18. For more information, visit www.carrollcap.org.
