On Aug. 26, 2003, the Civil Air Patrol’s Carroll Composite Squadron paid a visit to UPS’s Baltimore office and presented UPS with an award certificate. The award designates UPS as an honorary member of the Civil Air Patrol in recognition of its humanitarian services to our country. The visit and award were intended as a thank you to UPS for a recent $1,000 charitable donation.

“The commitment that UPS has shown to the CAP is deeply appreciated,” said Major Christian Ready, Commander of the Carroll Composite Squadron. “Recently, we have been instructed to prepare for increased homeland security missions. In order to prepare for these missions, we are seeking to raise funds this year for necessary equipment. The UPS donation will be used toward the purchase of a 15-passenger van. This van will be used primarily to transport ground team members to search and rescue missions.”

Presented on June 25, 2003, the $1000 donation was awarded to CAP by The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS. Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, The UPS foundation identifies specific areas where its support will clearly impact social issues. In 2002, The UPS Foundation distributed more than $38.4 million worldwide.

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is a volunteer organization that serves the community by providing Search and Rescue and Disaster Relief services on behalf of the Air Force. Today, CAP conducts 90% of the Air Force’s annual inland Search and Rescue missions, and assists local agencies in disaster relief efforts.

CAP’s Carroll Composite Squadron provides support and resources for several other agencies in their community. These agencies include the Red Cross, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Coast Guard, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and state and local police forces.

Active support provided by the CAP includes damage assessment, radiological monitoring, and low altitude route surveys. The CAP assists local police forces in missing person’s searches. They are also community leaders in Aerospace education, preparing CAP members for and educating the community about Aerospace issues currently facing our nation.

The CAP currently hosts Cadet Programs that provide young people between 13 and 18 the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through their interest in aviation. Cadets have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities including encampments on military bases, orientation flights, and a variety of national and international activities.
