The 6th annual Maryland Wing Glider Academy, held Aug 3-8, 2002, was another resounding success. As in past years, the Academy used Fort Detrick resources (classrooms, dining facility, swimming pool, etc) for the encampment component. Glider flights were conducted using the Frederick Municipal Airport glider strip - but this year with 2 CAP gliders and the new CAP Maule.

The week long event included class room training in glider flight, radio communications and map reading. There were some weather related problems - thunderstorms and crosswinds - that delayed glider flights. Each of the 36 cadet attendees did receive their 2 glider flights thanks to the hard work and dedication of the pilots and flight line support staff.

There were other fun activities as well. Lots of swimming in Fort Detrick's pool. An evening trip to Greenbrier State Park for some beach time - at the lake. Gallons of Italian Ices, compliments of Lt Col Kent Kershenstein. Late night movies (Saving Private Ryan, Air Force One, ...) on the big screen in classroom #1.

Thanks again to the CAP cadets, senior members and parents who supported the Academy.

Hope you enjoy the pictures from Glider Academy 2002.
